Description

This book attempts to look at Nepali history from Prithvi Narayan Shah to Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah through the role of women.

Five women played a decisive role in the history of Nepal from the beginning of the unification of Nepal to the middle of the Rana rule. Among these, Prithvi Narayan Shah’s daughter-in-law Rajendra Lakshmi contributed to the unification even though she was a widow.

Raja Ran Bahadur Shah’s eldest queen, Rajarajeshwori, was living in Helambu, north of Kathmandu, following the Lama religion. Ran Bahadur was assassinated in Kathmandu. She was taken to Helambuwat, Kathmandu. A week after Ran Bahadur’s cremation, she was sent to Pashupati to commit Sati.

Ran Bahadur’s younger queen, Lalit Tripura Sundari, was saved from being committed to Sati by Bhimsen Thapa. She is the daughter of Bhimsen Thapa’s brother Nayan Singh Thapa.

King Rajendra’s younger sister, Queen Rajendra Lakshmi, wanted to make her son Ranendra king instead of Prince Surendra, who was born from the womb of her half-sister Samajya Lakshmi. Her ambition to make Ranendra king led to the Kot Parva. After the Kot Parva, Janga Bahadur took power.

Bagki’s younger sister, Maiya Deepkumari, was the daughter of Janga Bahadur. She was married to Dhirendra, the son of Upendra Vikram. She became a widow at the age of 20. After Janga Bahadur’s brother Ranodwip was assassinated in the 1942 B.S. festival, Janga’s children were out of the running to become Prime Minister. Power went to the sons of Dhir Shamsher. Bagki’s younger sister, Maiya Deepkumari, played a decisive role in making this happen.
